A mood disorder is any condition that leaves a patient incapable of properly regulating or relating to his or her emotions. A mood disorder victim, in other words, is very much a slave to his or her emotional state. To suffer from a mood disturbance is to be prone to stark and unpredictable mood swings, without the will or capacity to control them. It is, to say the least, not a pleasant way to live one’s life…which is why it should be no surprise that many mood disturbance sufferers turn to drugs and alcohol as a means of self-medication. The obvious corollary, of course, is that a successful addiction treatment program has to entail thorough psychological therapy.
An addict with a mood disorder can’t get sober without first healing on an emotional level. The best drug and alcohol rehab centers, then, are the ones that offer dual diagnosis services to their clients. In fact, only through proper dual diagnosis and treatment can an addict with a mood disorder expect to get sober for good. In the end, anything less simply isn’t good enough.
